From LF to FIT...

Bianca Briglio ‘19 is from the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia where she attended Mother of Divine Grace before entering Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls in 2015. Bianca is the first Little Flower student to be accepted to FIT! We asked Bianca all about her acceptance into the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC (with acceptance into the Presidential Scholar Program!) and everything that led up to her decision.

What influenced you to go into Fashion?

Ever since I can remember, I have loved clothes and shoes. When I was a freshman, I started researching and found FIT and when I realized that I could study fashion and business, which are two things I love, I instantly fell in love with FIT. Also, New York is my favorite place and to have the chance to live there made FIT event more appealing to me! My cousin is also graduating from FIT this year, so I would always go and stay with her on weekends. I am so happy that I got to experience little parts of the city and FIT with her.

One experience I will always remember is working New York Fashion Week. In September of 2018, I went to NYC for a couple days and worked 7 different shows in two days. I was a part of the check-in/usher team, so I would greet the guests and bring them to their seats. In between shows, I would assist in setting the venue up and got the opportunity to interact with the different designers and models. I was asked to come back and work Bridal Fashion Week in October; I did the same thing there as I did in September. After Bridal, I still kept in touch with the people in charge and they asked me to come back for New York Fashion Week in February. Without hesitation, I said yes and worked on the check-in/usher team, but this time the show producer asked me to be the leader because the other girls had never worked Fashion Week before.

Last summer, I spent a week in New York because I took a pre-college course at FIT, where I learned all about retail, wholesale, merchandising, and everything that comes along with the industry. I believe that these different experiences aided with my acceptance to FIT.

What is your intended major? What do you plan to do with that major?

At the Fashion Institute of Technology, I will be majoring in Fashion Business Management.

After I graduate from FIT, I hope to be either a stylist or a fashion buyer for a luxury brand. Also, I plan on staying in New York City after graduation.

What is the Presidential Scholar Program and what does it entail?

While researching FIT, I found the Presidential Scholar Program and decided that I wanted to apply to it. The Presidential Scholar Program is a small community of the about 180 students out of the 9,000 student body. It is a very competitive program that only accepts 45 of the entire freshman class. It is based on academics, SAT scores, and an essay. Perks of being a part of this program include specially designed honors liberal arts courses, monthly colloquium, extracurricular and community service activities, access to Broadway tickets, and great networking opportunities. It is such an honor to be a part of this program with all the amazing amenities that come with it. I am so excited to be a part of the community with like minded friends.

What kind of activities are you involved in at Little Flower?

At LF, I am involved in many different activities: I am the president of CSC, a SGA representative, and a member of NHS. I am here so much, LF really is my second home!

What is life like for you outside of Little Flower? Do you have a big family?

Outside of school, I work at a summer camp in my neighborhood. Also, I have a retail job at Urban Exchange in Fishtown. I started there as an intern January of 2018 and then was hired there last April. I love my job and all the fun experiences that come along with it.

Although I do not have any siblings, I do have a large family full of cousins and many aunts and uncles. I am very close with my family, especially since I live 3 houses away from my grandparents! And 3 other aunts and uncles of mine live on my block alone! The people in my family are the first people I go to. I remember the day my acceptance came in, after telling my parents I ran down to my grandparents and showed them!
