Little Flower’s fine arts department gives students the opportunity to learn how to express themselves through their interests and talents. This leads many students to find their passion in life. Skylar Jones ‘21 is one of those students.
Skylar began to take an interest in art while watching her God-sister draw when Skylar was younger. She remembers trying to copy some of her God-sister’s artworks. Although this was when she began drawing, she did not take it seriously until her sophomore year at Little Flower.
Since her sophomore year, Skylar has taken Art 1, 2, and is currently taking Art 3. Although Skylar does well in all of her classes, nothing sparked her interest as much as these art classes. In art, Skylar has found comfort and an outlet for self-expression. She compares art to a journal by saying that with a journal “you get to write your feelings out. But with a canvas, you use the colors to express the feelings you have,”
Some of Skylar’s favorite techniques include watercolor, acrylic painting, and “dabbling” in black and grey tones; however, she is most fond of a technique known as quilling. She describes this technique as rolling “individual pieces of paper and [making] something come to life,”
Skylar likes learning from a variety of different people and feels that she has experienced that at Little Flower. “I feel like everyone as a whole has taught me something. They helped me become better as a person through my years,”
Skylar’s teacher, Mrs. Diehl, has had a special impact on her over the last three years, but she has learned a lot from her peers as well. “I get to learn how people think, the knowledge that they have, and their personalities,”
After graduating from Little Flower in June, Skylar will be continuing her education at Thomas Jefferson University as an Interior Design major.
In the future, she wishes to embrace her entrepreneurial side and start her own business. “My hope is to start my [own] interior design company, where young entrepreneurs, like myself, can work in an environment where we can share ideas, [and] collaborate with each other on house projects to meet every customer’s needs.” She hopes to move to Manhattan, New York, as well.
Skylar concludes by saying, “Being able to share my story and dream with you is truly a blessing and I always pray to God of how I'm thankful for opportunities like this,”
