The Black Student Union at Little Flower successfully held their first annual BSU Week that was celebrated from February 14 to February 18. This week-long event was filled with programs and special guests that help lift the spirits of celebrating Black History Month. BSU Week kicked off with handing out hand written compliment cards that were given to staff and students. Joyful moments to know that small acts are appreciated and hear how special you are to someone! Next, there was a special guest speaker from Temple University's Beta Delta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., which is one of the nine historically Black sororities established in The National Pan-Hellenic Council, colloquially known as the "Divine Nine". These speakers presented a beautiful presentation on Black Greek life, preparing for the transition to college and what it means to be a first generation to attend a university.
BSU Week continued with another guest presentation from The Black Professional Health Association at Temple University. Discussion topic was focused on conquering mental health while attending college, coping mechanisms and answering questions for prospective students who wish to enter into a STEM field. Lastly, with another success of a week-long bake sale and a terrific turn out for an after school game night (special thank you to Roman Catholics BSU for attending); BSU Week was truly successful. The board members put in a lot of work to see their ideas for celebrating and honoring those that prevailed before them as we end Black History Month 2022.
Being able to express oneself is an amazing attribute to be able to contribute to the world. With the Bloom program, the young ladies came together under the guidance of Ms. Diaz to create a beautiful new addition that found its home in the cafeteria. Sadness arose with the closing of Hallahan and McDevitt; however, we can now fill that void with joy by embracing the transfer students into becoming our sisters at Little Flower. The mural speaks a narrative into our community. Expanding our community is reflected into the mural through symbols. It showcases various life lessons that can be cherished throughout such as “Love Thy Neighbor” and “Respect Your Community”. When looking upon the mural, you will see “Where our roots are planted”. We hope that all students, present and future students, will grow strong through their time at Little Flower and blossom into greatness.
